The 51st Fleur du Cap Theatre Awards is setting the stage, honouring theatre excellence in South Africa by taking guests on a sensory journey of wine and artisanal salt pairings designed by salt aficionado, chef Craig Cormack.
This year, the annual event will take place at the Baxter Theatre in Cape Town on Sunday, 20 March 2016.
Fleur du Cap has been honouring theatre excellence in South Africa for decades and will this year not only applaud theatre in the Western Cape, but will personify a fusion of cultures, food and Fleur du Cap wines.
Balanced and elegant, Fleur du Cap wines are generous expressions of varietal character. Their complexity and richness – shaped by the philosophy of Regional Excellence – are fundamental to a unique experience of pairing wine and salt.
“Fleur du Cap unlocks the natural expression of grapes from select parcels of vines grown in diverse locations throughout the Western Cape region. Each site is selected for its unique combination of soils, climate, aspect and orientation best suited to a particular grape variety. This is what we call Regional Excellence,” says Wim Truter, cellarmaster at Die Bergkelder, who will be collaborating with chef Craig Cormack at the Theatre Awards.
Fleur du Cap wines and artisanal salt are in perfect synergy as far as Regional Excellence is concerned: “As with wine, location, climate and the elements all dictate the character of salt, another of nature’s gifts expressing their origins and sense of place,” adds Truter.
Guests at the Theatre Awards will be treated to five delicious pairings of Fleur du Cap wines and gourmet dishes enriched by artisanal salt from across the globe.
From the tropical notes in the Bergkelder Selection Chenin Blanc partnered with Pizzadeliere drizzled in Caviar Salt, to the sweet cherry and plum flavours of Shiraz combined with Khoisan salt infused venison, this unique culinary experience is sure to steal a little of the limelight.
Each dish of Chef Craig is designed for a particular flavour profile that pairs perfectly with Fleur du Cap wines. He firmly believes that these nature-inspired wines are ideal for artisanal salt pairings as the wines have great complexity and richness.
The recipes of the salt inspired dishes served on the evening can all be found in Fleur du Cap’s Salt and Wine Experience booklet available at Die Bergkelder. This famous cellar in the mountain in Stellenbosch offers daily Fleur du Cap wine and salt pairings and is well worth a visit.
