Another week, another Cape Town Blogger interview. Read our Interview with Christopher Garrow and see what his site thegreatadventurer.com is about.
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I am a final year BCom student who has a huge passion for the outdoors. I get itchy feet every weekend and usually end up going for a drive of 100km+ at the expense of my poor petrol tank. I really love the ocean & camping and every week I am doing one or the other.
How you first got involved with blogging?
I always wanted to a website & had the idea for a few years and one day I decided it was time. I also really liked the idea of sharing my thoughts and interests and trying to inspire others to get outdoors and enjoy what our beautiful country has to offer.
What do you find most challenging about blogging about your topic?
It isn’t really challenging in the sense that this is my passion but one big challenge is trying to differentiate your content from others. I don’t want my blog to be “just another blog” in my topic, I want to create a unique identity.
What do you do when you aren’t working on your blog?
Camping, studying, watching rugby, driving, surfski’ing, surfing & getting out the house whenever I can.
Name some of the bloggers you look up to and why?
I really look up to lifeissavage, mrcapetown, bangers&nash & mycitybynight because they call a spade a spade and have built up really successful blogs with a good following. I also look up to reviewme.co.za because I can see how hard he works promoting his site and how much effort he puts into it. The main blogger I look up to is Cape Town Daily Photo because he really offered some good advice when I was starting out and helped wherever he could. I also like the concept of his site and I wish I thought of it J
If someone was interested in blogging , what would a few things you would suggest?
I would suggest that if you are on the fence then start a free blog on wordpress and see how you enjoy it. If you aren’t enjoying it, no matter how much traffic you get, then it is probably best to reassess the situation.
What’s your strategy with your blog in general?
My strategy is to post information that I think will be of value to readers and share it with whoever I think will find it useful.
Which one plugin would you suggest all bloggers to have?
Akismet, it stops all the spam and lets you gain control of your comments! It literally stops thousands of spam comments and it is an essential for all bloggers.
How would someone describe your blogging style?
Informal & informative.
Everyone has a favourite and least favourite post, what are yours?
My favourite post would definitely be the “Camping in Robertson” one. The actual trip which inspired the posts was one of my favourites ever & the post offers lots of relevant information which would be useful if you wanted to go camping in Robertson. My least favourite would be the “Cape Town Bike Festival” post, I was really looking forward to the event and unfortunately it was cancelled!
