Say hello to Claire. She is another Cape Town blogger and we are happy to have her interview. Learn more about Claire…
Can you tell us a little about yourself?
I’m a 30 something Mom of 2 boys living in the Overberg area. I am a PHP developer plus I run 2 wedding directories called Celebration.co.za and TrouInspirasie.co.za PLUS I blog daily on the South Africa Wedding Blog (http://blog.celebration.co.za).
Other websites I run / manage include Momtrepreneur.co.za, EventFocus.co.za, Greenminded.co.za and I’ve developed a product for the wedding industry – a wedding planning file called Love Celebration (http://www.lovecelebration.co.za). And when I have time, I write, search for inspiration, Pinterest and do development work for clients!
How you first got involved in with blogging?
When I found I was pregnant with my first son, I started a blog. Then, with the increased popularity of blogs, I started the South Africa Wedding blog which I do daily. When I have some spare time, I love to blog on Momtrepreneur.co.za about recipes through to tips and advice for Moms (working or stay at home Moms).
What do you find most challenging about blogging about your topic?
The biggest challenge is coming up with new content and ideas that people will WANT to read. I don’t like to only write about stuff that is good for search engines – I actually love to write about stuff that people are interested in and will either learn something from or enjoy the read!
Tell me about some of the people you’ve met while working on your blog?
Through the South Africa Wedding blogs, I’ve met fellow South Africa wedding bloggers. Through Momtrepreneur.co.za, I’ve met some amazing women who are Moms and also bloggers!
How would (someone) describe your blogging style?
If I had to describe my style of writing, it would be casual, humorous where possible / suitable and as much as possible, to the point.
What do you do when you aren’t working on your blog?
Gosh, what aren’t I doing!? ? Social media, development, coming up with more ideas for the various sites, more offerings for my businesses, researching, Pinterest and writing more content.
If I’m not busy with the above, I’m spending time with my kids and more than likely getting dirty as a result!
What networking do you do that you feel helps your blogging business?
My main networking is via Social Media and emails.
How do you keep coming up with material/content for your blog?
For the wedding blog, I come up with ideas that I think brides will like based on what I know about the industry. For ideas or inspiration, I read magazines regularly, see what brides are asking about on various forums or social channels or try something I think could be fun to blog about.
Where do you go for news and information online?
Everywhere – Facebook pages, News24.com and IOL.
Whats your strategy with your blog in general?
To provide useful content that helps brides / Moms. My focus is about giving back and not about much else!
What would you prioritize? Content? SEO? Traffic? Readers?
Content and Readers, to me, are the most important. Traffic will come if the content is good – people talk.
SEO is obviously important, BUT I don’t think it’s the most important thing. You don’t want to rank well and not have the useful content to
What’s the best thing a blogger can give to his readers?
My opinion – a good read of good content and in my case, when they’re done reading, they’ve enjoyed reading the post and hopefully learnt a thing or 2.
What has been your strategy for creating visibility to yourself and your blog?
My strategy has been marketing my blogs through my social channels (Facebook and Twitter specifically) and through friends and mailers. Ranking well has been a focus as well to ensure I get the traffic that my social channels and friends can’t reach.
What was the most challenging moment in your blog content development process and why?
TOPIC! TOPIC! TOPIC! Once I’ve got the topic, I generally get onto a roll!
Everyone has a favorite/least favorite post. Name yours and why?
Wow, this is a tough one!
I probably have a few of both. My reasoning for a post not being my favourite would simply be because they weren’t received like I had liked them to be received.
What is the ultimate Goal for a blogger in your opinion?
I think it’s great to be appreciated by people.
Which one plugin would you suggest all bloggers to have?
Faster Image Insert (WordPress) – LOVE this plugin – it has simplified my life a LOT!
Name some of the bloggers whom you look up to and why?
Tertia from So Close
If someone was interested in blogging, what would be a few things you would suggest?
Don’t expect to make a lot of money from it unless you’re one of the real lucky ones (at least for the first few months)
Be passionate about it (or at least enjoy it), otherwise don’t do it because you won’t stick to it.
Post regularly (at least twice a week) – you have to be regular with your posts to keep reminding people you exist.
Don’t be too long winded ?
