Great news for Cape Town. The city has been named World Design Capital for the year 2014.
So now the question what is this? I looked it up and found this:
The World Design Capital title is awarded bi-annually by the International Council for Societies of Industrial Design (ICSID) to give global prominence to cities that use design for their social, economic and cultural development.
The World Design Capital title is awarded in advance, allowing winning cities sufficient time to plan, develop and promote a year-long programme of World Design Capital-themed events for their designated year.
What does that mean for Cape Town? I would reckon lots of exposure and hopefully lots tourists in the coming years. As tourism is Cape Town biggest source of money this news is really an important one. If you would like to learn more about the competition visit the website of Cape Town World Design Capital 2014.
So we had the World Cup, the Business Traveller award, World Design Capital and also today Cape Town was voted No. 3 as Favourite City Worldwide at the Telegraph Travel Awards 2011. What´s next? Hopefully Cape Town will make it in the new 7 Wonders of the World. And I would like to see a Formular 1 race next year 😉
