Camphors restaurant plans three wonderful winter dinners

The Cape’s cold season is when many food and wine lovers enjoy indulging in leisurely culinary experiences – and a highlight will be three innovative, hyper-seasonal winter dinners at Camphors, the signature restaurant of 318-year-old Somerset West estate Vergelegen.

Camphors scooped not only sixth place overall in the latest Eat Out Mercedes Benz Restaurant Awards, but also took the Eat Out Woolworths Sustainability Award. The estate was named the first Biodiversity and Wine Initiative Champion in 2005 and remains renowned for its environmental initiatives.

The theme of the first, one-of-a-kind dinner, planned for Saturday 28 July, will be ‘Progression of our Food Source’. Executive Chef Michael Cooke says the dinner will incorporate influences such as Fair Trade, and how farmers and producers have risen to the challenge of supplying superb ingredients despite the drought and water restrictions. The Red Table restaurant at Nederburg in Paarl is putting on a man feast of note, with a hearty winter meal planned for Father’s Day on Sunday, 17 June.

Treat dad to a delicious three-course lunch, offered at R380 per person (wine and service charge excluded). This super-tasty man-menu, conceived by chef Edmore Ruzoza, features a starter of Thai green curry prawns served with a dill and fennel fishcake, or a roasted tomato tart with goat’s cheese, wholegrain mustard and balsamic onions.

The main course selection offers a choice between AAA-grade T-bone steak served with a porcini mushroom sauce, Parmesan pomme purée and roasted winter vegetables; baked line fish with roasted fennel sauce, vine tomatoes, broccoli and red onions; or confit butternut with smoked tomato curry, baby beetroot and a papadum. Nederburg’s The Red Table restaurant, situated in the Paarl winery’s historic manor house, will be serving up a heart-warming winter feast of meat and spice, prepared by talented chef Edmore Ruzoza and his team, during Seven Days of Shiraz & Venison at Nederburg from 11 to 17 June.

Offered individually, or as a set menu at R320 per person, guests can relax in the warm and inviting atmosphere of the manor house with fires blazing, while indulging in a starter of lightly smoked ostrich carpaccio, served with ripe figs and goat cheese (R95 individually); a main course of slow-braised kudu shank, creamy cauliflower purée, baby vegetables and café au lait sauce (R185 individually); and espresso br?lée with pistachio biscotti as a sweet ending. The main course is served with a complimentary glass of Nederburg’s juicy The Winemasters Shiraz 2016.

The Delheim Jazz & Cheese Fondue series plays an exciting new tune in the Stellenbosch Winelands this year thanks to the announcement of a collaboration with the Cape Town Music Academy (CTMA) and Jazz in the Native Yards.
