Interesting that I had not noticed it sooner….
The past 6-8 months I’ve come to love Zumba as my workout of choice and as I’ve written before, recently become certified to instruct myself. I teach my first class tonight.
Zumba is a latin-inspired dance fitness class with the tagline “Ditch the workout. Join the party.” And they are serious about the party atmosphere. Music is loud, hips are gyrating and wild, brightly colored outfits set the tone. For that reason, Zumba is not a class you take passively– you either LOVE it and attend regularly– or perhaps try it and say, “it’s not for me”. When you are shaking your proverbial ‘groove thing’ for an hour in a pool of sweat, you have no choice but let your guard down and have fun. This leads to a certain camaraderie between the regulars. And the camaraderie can lead to friendship.
The core group of regulars at our gym have gotten together to go in to New York City (we’re about 45 minutes away) to attend Master Classes. Soon, we will attend a major Breast Cancer Awareness Zumbathon. Our instructor Amy, who, in my humble opinion, is the Zumba equivalent of Lance Armstrong, has mentored several of the newbies in our certification process….which she didn’t have to do. That’s not part of her ‘job’ as an Instructor. The other day after class a small group went to visit one of the class regulars who’s husband is very ill. They sat with her at the hospital and kept her company for an hour, in their Zumba gear, no less. I thought maybe they all knew each other before. I asked. No, they met through class.
I thought that was a interesting blessing–making new friends through, ‘ditching the workout and joining the party.’
Have a Great Week.
