Hiking in Haute Maurienne Vanoise

The Vanoise National Park is the first national park in France and was opened in 1963 with over 500 square kilometres. The national park is located in the department of Savoie and is the highest landscape in Europe.

The rugged peaks of the Western Alps, the wild, untouched nature in the Gran Paradiso and Mercantour National Parks and the lonely mountain villages in the Piedmontese Alps make the Blue Trail a highlight for nature lovers.

We start in the dense forest and climb upwards, following a beautiful mountain forest path, always with impressive views, until we reach the wide, hilly pasture fields above the forest. The shorter route turns off the Via Alpina to the west immediately after entering the national park. We made a right turn via Bellecombe.

Alpine lakes located near the Refuge du Thabor from which one can enjoy a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains.

The Tour of the Glaciers through the Vanoise Massif is the classic walk par excellence in the Parc National de la Vanoise. 

The 2150 kilometre GR 5 connects the North Sea from Rotterdam to Nice and the Mediterranean via Belgium, Luxembourg and Switzerland. It is part of the European E2 Trail. The hike on the GR 5 leads mainly into the Grande Traversée des Vosges, the Jura and the Alps.

A route leading high up through glacial landscapes with views as far as Mont Blanc. The Sommeiller peak is named after the engineer Germain Sommeiller, who directed the work on the Frejus railway tunnel.
