The Hérault département is located in the south of France and is part of the Occitanie region. It borders the departments of Aude to the south-west, Tarn and Aveyron to the north-west and Gard to the north-east, and is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south.
The Hérault is often described as an open amphitheatre facing the sea. The geography of the Hérault is marked by the diversity of its geology and landscapes. These range from the southern foothills of the Massif Central to the Mediterranean Sea, passing through areas of garrigue and the lower plains of the Languedoc wine region.
The vast majority of the département has a Mediterranean climate. However, the mountainous areas in the north-west have an oceanic influence. Some areas in the north of the Hérault may experience a temperate continental influence.
As in the southern Mediterranean as a whole, there is a lot of sunshine in the Hérault, and it is relatively regular throughout the year. There are 2,828 hours of sunshine a year, compared with a national average of less than 2,000 hours.
