Where the Rhine and Moselle meander gently through the slate mountains lies the westernmost state in Germany: Rhineland-Palatinate. To the right and left of the banks of the Rhine, idyllic cultural landscapes with vineyards and a historic world of castles have been created in the region's millennia-old history. The Roman Porta Nigra in Trier, the Deutsches Eck in Koblenz, the Maar landscape in the Volcanic Eifel and the numerous impressive churches like the cathedrals of Speyer, Mainz and Worms are all well worth a visit.
