Town of Saint-Lizier
Near Saint-Girons, high above the Salat, Saint-Lizier is one of the most beautiful villages in Ariège and France. A major site in the Occitanie region, this ancient Gallo-Roman town has so much history to tell and so many treasures to reveal.
Saint-Lizier, an ancient Gallo-Roman town in the heart of the Couserans region, can be explored through its charming cobbled streets, secret passageways and pretty flower-filled squares, making it a haven of peace for anyone strolling through. Around every corner, the views are breathtaking. You'll be amazed by the views across the valley: green meadows and forests, the river flowing past and the snow-capped Pyrenees in the distance. Here, peace and quiet bring serenity. As you enter the village, you'll notice the beauty and richness of the architecture. Many of the sites are steeped in history, with astonishing monuments listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago de Compostela.
Saint-Lizier has not one, but two cathedrals that have stood proudly for centuries. Notre Dame de la Sède cathedral, in the heart of the Palais des Évêques, features monumental Renaissance paintings. This former episcopal residence also houses a museum offering a journey from antiquity to the present day.
The Hôtel Dieux pharmacy is not to be outdone. Here, time stands still in the 18th century. On the wooden shelves are numerous blown bottles and earthenware pots with surprising inscriptions: "dog oil", "vinegar of the 4 thieves", "elixir of life"...
