The Zentralalpine long-distance hiking trail 02 was opened in 1978 and its western section deserves to be called an Alpine high-altitude route. At the very eastern edge of the Alps, however, it still passes through flat and hilly country as well as pre-alpine terrain. It crosses the federal states of Lower Austria, Burgenland, Styria, Salzburg, Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg and touches the Donau-Auen and Hohe Tauern National Parks.
