Immerse yourself in the history of Le Plateau Mine and the surrounding area with this impressive museum exhibition!
The museum is located in Thio’s main street in an old colonial-style house listed as a South Province historic monument. Built in the 1890s, it used to be the home of the director of Société Le Nickel. It’s easy to spot the museum, as it has the remains of an old steam locomotive at the entrance. In the four rooms you’ll find photos of the town in the early 20th century, along with a collection of old and modern mining tools, crockery from the former SLN fleet and a collection of minerals. Enthusiasts can even treat themselves to some nickel, and children will be interested to learn about the mine’s history in a fun way through a variety of discovery games.
Once a month, the Thio tourist office organises a tour of the mine and museum followed by an (optional) tribal meal. Keep an eye on the museum's schedule to make sure you don’t miss the next one!
