Explore the favourite spot of High Chief Kaoua's daughter, whose name lives on in this unique cave hidden in the rainforest!
Oumagne Cave (Grotte d’Oumagne), better known as Queen Hortense’s Cave, is situated in the north of the Isle of Pines, in the heart of lush, tropical vegetation traversed by a stream. At the entrance, you will see a little temple in memory of the queen. Although her Kanak name was Kanedjo, she was later named Hortense in tribute to the mother of Napoléon III. This place became her refuge at a time when inter-tribal conflicts were at their height. She was and still is an important figure for the Kunié people.
As soon as you enter the cave, you’ll be impressed by the giant stalactites, vines and banyan roots. If you want to explore the tunnel as far as its air shaft, don't forget to bring a torch.
Bring cash to pay the entry fee (500 XPF).
