La Seu Cathedral
With the Reconquista under King James I, which began its triumphal march over Mallorca in 1229, the capital of the Balearic island changed its name and face:
Where once the large main mosque formed the centre of Medina Mayurka, James I laid the foundation stone for the symbol of Christian power – La Seu Cathedral of Palma. Its completion took time – so 300 years alone passed before Bishop Joan Vich i Manrique could bless the main portal. The interior of the cathedral was designed by Antoni Gaud between 1904 and 1914. To this day, the monumental tourist magnet with its huge Gothic window rosette (97 m²) dominates the cityscape.
In the foundations of the mighty cathedral La Seu, archaeologists found the remains of a Roman thermal bath in 2000.The souvenir shop of the cathedral also offers one of the few glimpses of the Roman past: through a pane of glass embedded in the floor, columns that surrounded a Roman street become visible. The alley Carrer de Sant Roc north of the church still follows the course of this Roman relic.
