The spherical tower, formally known as Xantus János Spheric Tower was last renovated in 2012. Originally, it was built for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair. Later it was displayed at the Budapest Trade Fair site and finally, it was relocated to Balatonboglár in the late ‘60s to replace its predecessor, a tower with a wooden structure.
Initial plans to cover it with glass were dropped and it remained open. The Sphere (15 metres in diameter formed by 240 triangles) sitting at 165 metres offers a splendid view over the buttes on the northern side of the lake.
In the early 20th century, the hill was completely barren and a senior leader of the town called Gaston Gaal was the one to plant black pines there. The tower has pleasant surroundings for a leisurely walk and picnic too. It also neighbours an adventure park and a bobsleigh track.
