Originally built in 13th Century, this black slate and shale fortification was transformed into a grand country home during the 15th Century. Built out of earth and wood, this motte and bailey castle is the forerunner to the stone fortress. The Haie Joulain site represents a fortified stronghold from around 1000 AD. The raised earth mound is topped with a keep and the courtyard contains dwellings and farm buildings.

This work, based on a 1st century A.D. manuscript (the visions of St John, the final text of the New Testament), illustrates the historical, social and political context of 14th century France, at the time of the Hundred Years War, of epidemics and famine.
