It still makes for surprised faces when people refer to Vienna and the Vienna Woods as one of the best mountain bike areas in Austria. In the meantime, however, word has got around that mountain biking and Vienna go well together. The Vienna Woods with its wide, gentle hills, motivated trail builders and the often very long season make Vienna one of the MTB hotspots in Austria.

Open the Route PlannerThree reasons why mountain biking in Vienna is great:
Before we present a few routes in more detail, we would like to note why it is worth taking a bike trip to Vienna. These are our reasons why biking in Vienna is so great:
- The trail centres: There are two trail centres in the immediate vicinity of Vienna. In Weidlingbach, two top shaped trails await you with Fun and Flow Line. The Hohe Wand meadow in Mauerbach offers a few more trails, including a massive jump line and the super fun Kenda Line. After the session, you will also be well catered for here in our own bistro.
- From the trail to the Danube: If you finish the tour in the north of the Vienna Woods, you are right on the Danube Island, THE leisure paradise of the Viennese with great opportunities for swimming and relaxing. In summer, there should always be room for a bathing suit in your rucksack.
- The flow: The Wienerwald offers many particularly flowing trails. Of course, there is also a stone and a few roots here and there, but most of the time you ride on compact, loamy soil and it's a pretty fast downhill!
Trails and tours in the northern Wienerwald
The city of almost two million inhabitants is bordered to the west by the Vienna Woods, which allow the Viennese a quick escape from the city. No wish is left unfulfilled for visitors to the city: Accommodation in all categories, a great cultural offer and even a lively range of sports are on offer. Especially for mountain biking, the city limits offer a huge area for extensive tours, which can be extended with several official trails and several shared trails.
The mountain bike trail is a great way to get around the city.
With 1400 km, the mountain bike route network in Vienna and neighbouring Lower Austria is really big enough to avoid repeat rides for a long time. One of the most popular meeting points for Viennese mountain bikers is the Hameau, a clearing above the Schwarzenbergpark, which can be reached on various paths. A particularly beautiful variant is the Hameau trail. Other variants that pass by here are the Wilhelminenberg route and the Kahlenbergdorf route.
Easy MTB routes around Vienna
The Vienna Woods is a great area for those who are just starting to bike. The climbs are not too long, the trails are often flowing and you are quickly back in the city. Signposted routes such as the Schottenhof route or the Hameau route are also technically easy and can be managed by most people in terms of fitness. Some single trails are also suitable for beginners. This is especially true for the Roan Trail, which winds its way north from the Hameau through the forest.
On the northern city limits of Vienna, the Bisamberg is a nice destination for a mountain bike ride. From the top you have a great view of the Danube and several wine taverns invite you to stop for a drink.
Viennese classics: Lainzer Runde and Sophienalpe
The loop around the Lainzer Tiergarten is certainly one of the most popular mountain bike tours around Vienna. The varied route runs along the walls of the zoo on trails, paths and short asphalt sections. Steep sections are just as much a part of it as the odd technical challenge – this route offers everything you could wish for in a mountain bike tour.
.The Sophienalpe is one of the most beautiful vantage points around Vienna and is accessed by pleasantly steep gravel roads. The tour from the city up to the beautiful clearing is not too difficult and offers several variations. A visit to the Hohe Wand Wiese trail centre is also possible.
The Wienerwald is also a great area for gravel biking. Most of the trails can also be mastered by technically experienced riders on gravel bikes.
Trips to Lower Austria
In the south of Vienna there are two other top areas, Baden and Mödling. The quickest and easiest way to reach these two charming small towns is by S-Bahn. In Mödling, the action takes place around the Anninger, which can be ridden from many sides and now also offers a number of official trails.
In Baden near Vienna, the Hohe Lindkogel is the destination of ambitious mountain bikers. At just under 850 metres above sea level, it is one of the longest climbs around Vienna. It is a real „Wadlbeisser“ but you are welcomed at the top by the Schutzhaus „Eisernes Tor“ and a lookout tower, which offers a fantastic view of the Vienna Woods and the Vienna Basin.
