Road cycling routes in Vienna

Along the Danube in Vienna, you will usually encounter numerous racing cyclists. The perfect cycle paths along the river offer ideal conditions for collecting basic kilometres, having a relaxed chat with like-minded people or completing sporty intervals. The Danube cycle path to Greifenstein is one of the great classics and can also be easily extended to Tulln. This route stretches for around 40 kilometres and is flat throughout. Cycling along the Danube, especially in the early morning or evening hours, is pure pleasure.

The hymn "Oh you beautiful Vienna Woods" is not only sung by hikers, but also by passionate racing cyclists. This extensive area stretches from the western outskirts of Vienna far into Lower Austria. Here you will find a dense road network with little traffic. Although the climbs are not excessively long, a skilful combination can lead to a challenging overall elevation gain.

The climbs to Sophienalpe and Exelberg are among the highlights of the Vienna Woods. These two 200-metre climbs can be ideally combined in one tour, and the picturesque St. Corona am Schöpfl is a particularly popular destination for racing bike enthusiasts who enjoy longer tours.

The northern Weinviertel of Vienna is another paradise for road cyclists. In this expansive landscape with rolling hills and marvellous views, you can take long tours through idyllic villages and past architectural highlights.

The routes through the Kreuttal valley to the Leiser mountains are particularly recommended. The highest point, the Buschberg, rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view as far as Vienna. A stop at the Buschberg Hütte is a must before returning to Vienna along lonely country roads and wonderful cycle paths.
