Skin Remedies for Summer 2017

Summer tends to be the most expensive season of the year, especially when you’re getting out and about daily. The costs for summer vacations, summer camps and swimming pool fees can quickly add up. However, many people neglect one of the most important expenses of the summer: sun protection. While you have fun outside on beautiful, sunny summer days, the sun’s ultraviolet rays damage your skin, causing sunburn, unsightly sunspots and wrinkles.

From kayaking and surfing to playing volleyball and tanning on the beach, summer is always fun. Here are eight ways to take care of your skin and enjoy your summer vacation.

Protect the skin

Protect your skin from summer’s harsh UV rays (which are actually at work all year round, but even more so in summer), by wearing a sunscreen with a SPF (Sun Protection Factor) of at least 30+. Ask a dermatologist to recommend a broad spectrum sunscreen suitable for your skin type. If you plan to spend time at the beach, reapply the sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re in the water. Use different sunscreen products for your body and face – since facial skin is more delicate than skin elsewhere on the body. Apply the product at least 20 minutes before you go outdoors. Wear a wide-brimmed hat or scarf when outdoors. Alternatively, use an umbrella to keep the sun from harming your skin directly. Seek shade as far as possible and wear loose cotton clothing.

Soothe the skin

Sunburned skin is no fun as it can peel, itch and burn. So, as soon as you’re back indoors, bath in tepid water. Stay away from harsh soaps that strip the skin of oils. Use warm or cool water, especially when washing the face. Apply a soothing moisturising lotion at night.

Reduce consumption of fats

This means unhealthy or trans fats. You can increase consumption of good fats like avocado, walnuts and olive or coconut oil. Reduce consumption of cholesterol-laden food, salt and artificial sugars and fill up on fresh salads, fruits and vegetables instead.

Protect the eyes

The skin around the eyes is extremely delicate and most prone to sun damage. So wear a pair of UV-protective sunglasses as well as a wide-brimmed hat to prevent wrinkles around the eyes. Use good quality eye cream which will hydrate, nourish and protect the skin around the eyes.

Hydrate from inside out

Drink plenty of water to keep the skin hydrated from inside out. Women should drink at least six to eight glasses of water while men should drink eight to ten glasses. This quantity should be increased based on the level of physical activity and number of hours spent outdoors. You can also drink decaffeinated teas like herbal tea, homemade fresh fruit and vegetable juices and increase consumption of watery fruits like watermelon and cucumbers. This is one of the easiest ways to take care of skin in the summer for both men and women.

Stick to a balanced diet

A balanced diet is one which is nutritionally complete and contains equal amounts of vitamins, minerals, whole grains or complex carbs and proteins. It’s also rich in omega essential fatty acids. Foods such as berries, egg whites, whole grains, and almonds are good for the skin. A balanced diet will provide you with good amounts of antioxidants like vitamins A, C and E, which can fight summer damage from inside out.

Avoid wearing makeup to bed

This is something that must be taken care of throughout the year. When you wear makeup to bed, your pores get clogged with cosmetics, sweat and sebum. This is a surefire invitation for acne and a host of other skin issues. So use the cleansing-toning-moisturising routine before bed every day. There are must have skincare products that every person should have. Find out which ones works for you and stick with them. It might be best to check out the benefits of aloe vera in beauty products before buying them.

Take care of your hands and feet

Apart from facial skin care, you must also take care of the skin on your hands and feet. Wear rubber gloves when scrubbing pots and pans. Get a manicure and pedicure as often as you can. This will give you smooth skin on your hands and keep calluses and cracked heels at bay. Massage your hands and feet at night with your range of skincare products and cover them up with socks. This is an easy home remedy for soft hands and feet.

Now that you have the skinny on summer skin care, you can say hello to the season of rebirth and renewal with healthy and gorgeous skin.
