Watch out for the pink shorts! This year, 13 of the development runners from Hout Bay’s running club, the Hout Bay Harriers, will be showing their mettle in the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon taking place over the Easter Weekend (26 March 2016).

These athletes form part of the Club’s development programme. Thanks to private sponsorship and generous assistance from Adidas, the athletes will each receive a brand new pair of running shoes in time for the race.

The Hout Bay Harriers have been in operation since 1988. “We currently have just over 110 members, who proudly don their pink shorts at races over weekends,” says Gregson Lubbe, Hout Bay Harriers Chairperson. “Supporting our local community is important to us; with our development program we have fostered many talented runners to become running stars for professional clubs. It is important for us to make running accessible to those who would not have been able to participate in licenced races otherwise.”

Nomawethu Nika (40), the only lady on the development team, is looking forward to participating in her second ultramarathon. “I am so lucky to be part of the Hout Bay Harriers! We are like a family,” says Nika. “Imizamo Yethu means ‘our efforts’ in isiXhosa. Running is not just my passion; it is my way of letting my community know not to allow their circumstances to determine their future. We can all have a better future if we are willing to work for it,” she adds.

“Part of the support that we provide to the development team is ensuring they have the correct equipment. We are grateful for the generous sponsorships that we’ve received as a club to help us do this. Every bit of sponsorship helps and is always welcome by the Club. We’d like to express our deep gratitude to individual and corporate sponsors, notably Adidas who kitted the team with new shoes, for making our runners’ dream a reality,” says Lubbe.

“We are really proud to be part of the development runners’ journey, both on the road and in life,” concludes Lubbe.

The Hout Bay Harriers meet every Tuesday at 18:00 and run from the Hout Bay Yacht Club. There are different groups that go at different speeds. Everyone is welcome!
